Chartered by Congress in 1958, The Military Order of the Purple Heart is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat. Although our membership is restricted to the combat wounded, we support all veterans and their families with a myriad of nationwide programs by Chapters and National Service Officers.

The Purple Heart is the only decoration that attests--without question--to the bearer having been in combat
and one that an individual can not be recommended for...

MOPH's Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service (VAVS) Program

The Military Order of the Purple Heart's Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service (VAVS) Program is in effect throughout the VA medical center system. VAVS operates the largest volunteer program in the Federal Government, supplementing staff and resources in all areas of patient care and support. Volunteers supplement essential personnel, equipment, facilities and programs for the direct and indirect care, treatment and welfare of veteran patients. Military Order of the Purple Heart VAVS volunteers participate in the VA’s program and provide an invaluable service to other veterans and their families. The official VAVS Handbook is available for download below and on the downloads page to provide guidance to the Department and Chapter members involved in the Service. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the National VAVS Director.
